Gotham Review from Maverick Magazine by Alan Cackett

Cowboy Christmas is pure modern hillbilly... definite Steve Earle feel.

GOTHAM leans more towards rock with the occasional country influences shining through. There’s a ragged, rootsy feel to opener “Steal My Heart,” whilst on “Any Way the Wind Blows” Ted’s voice is more gravely with a soul edge. His bluesy side surfaces in “Livin’ in the Shadow of the Blues,” and he reunites with Jonathan Singleton on “Jump Through the Window” in a rousing flight of fancy about being able to escape this life at times. “Cowboy Christmas” is pure modern hillbilly with banjo to the fore a catchy chorus and a definite Steve Earle feel. He reprises “Roman Guard” from EMERALD CITY with a heavier arrangement that works quite well. Amongst the top class Nashville musician are Russ Pahl, Pat Buchanan, Dan Dugmore, Mike Brignardello plus singers Deana Perry and Rachel Loy. Featured on Maverick Magazine's website.

A Review of Gotham by Nell Fuqua

In this shadowy landscape, things and people are not quite what they seem, and the listener can get lost in both lyrics and haunting melodies.

Gotham is the flip side of Emerald City, in that it reflects a very different way of looking at life and gives us a guided tour of the dark side. There is an undercurrent of emotion that explores the darker side of society, and of ourselves. The music is rock with a ragged edge. The bassist treats us to a slinky backbeat that carries along warnings, taunts, appetites, and longings in the lyrics. The background vocals sound like sirens in the mist or spirits on the wind. Ted’s voice is perfectly matched to the music and adds layers of texture. In this shadowy landscape, things and people are not quite what they seem, and the listener can get lost in both lyrics and haunting melodies. “Cowboy Christmas” is one of my favorites - like Christmas on the Wagon Train set. “Yippee-aye-oh….Yippee Aye Aaaaa” . We are treated to a sample of Ted’s bluesy side in “Livin’ in the Shadow of the Blues,” and he reunites with Jonathan Singleton on “Jump Through the Window” in a rousing flight of fancy about being able to escape this life at times. Taken together, these two albums are bookends that totally complement each other.

Lyrics

Steal My Heart

It's all on the table/take a look right here...
If you're willing and able/gonna make it real clear...
Don't you know I ain't playing/I want to make you a deal...
Listen what I'm saying/I'll tell you just how I feel...
Steal my heart/steal my heart/steal my heart away...
Steal my heart/steal my heart/steal my heart away...
Well you know it's been broken a time or two...
It might beat a little slow but it still beats true...
And it's easy to take if only you will...
It's just sitting here waiting/waiting until...
You steal my heart/steal my heart/steal my heart away...
Steal my heart/steal my heart/steal my heart away...
I'm watching and waiting/guarding the gates...
Looking for a thief...
Some time tonight maybe she'll come after me...
Come after me...
Steal/steal/steal my heart -

Jamie Davis, Dan Isbell, Ted Jones

Any Way the Wind Blows

Have you ever broke down in a small town about a million miles from nowhere...
Half the time I stay lost anyway anyhow I don't care...
I was hearing music in my head now I'm trying to remember how it goes...
It goes any way the wind blows/any way the wind blows me is fine...
Any way the wind blows/any way it blows I don't mind...
Have you ever sat down at a bar/wondered where you are and how the hell you got there...
And the music plays/the people sway/seems like a place I've been before I swear...
So I have a drink/the waitress winks/makes me think she knows something I don't know...
She knows any way the wind blows/any way the wind blows me is fine...
Any way the wind blows/any way it blows I don't mind...
And I guess I'll keep on rambling/keep traveling down this road...
I'll just keep moving along till there ain't nowhere else to go...
Have you ever loaded up the car just to see how far you go and back again...
And it all starts to run together/all the names/all the places that you've been...
But one thing stays the same/this ol' world keeps on changing so I'm told...
It goes any way the wind blows/any way the wind blows me is fine...
Any way the wind blows/any way it blows I don't mind...

- Jonathan Singleton, Ted Jones

You Will

Guess you could say I found my own way...
I'm self made/didn't ask for nobody's help...
And there were times it was hard but I made it this far...
Got the scars to prove I did it by myself...
Then I caught you standing there looking at me...
Shaking your head/now I can see...
Everything changes/everybody needs somebody sometime...
I'm tired of spinning my wheels/gonna tell you how I feel...
Some day/somehow...
You may not love me now...
But you will...
Thought I was tough but girl you've had it rough...
A long run of hard luck would make anybody mean...
I think you'd rather die than let me see you cry...
And I ain't figured out why that's so beautiful to me...
But I caught you standing there looking at me...
Shaking your head/now I can see...
Everything changes/everybody needs somebody sometime...
I'm tired of spinning my wheels/gonna tell you how I feel...
Some day/somehow...
You may not love me now...
But you will...

Run Little Darlin'

Run little darlin'/keep on running wild and free...
Run till you've seen it all and there ain't nothing left to see...
Well you do what you do and believe what you want to believe...
But you ain't gonna find nobody that loves you/nobody like me...
Run little darlin'/run little darlin' run...
Believe what you want to believe...
But there ain't nobody like me...
Run little darlin'/keep on running down the road...
Run little darlin' run as fast as you can go...
You can run away from trouble/you can run away to Mexico...
You can run all night/you can run for your life/
you can run till the cows come home...
Run little darlin'/run little darlin' run...
Till the cows come home...
Way down to Mexico...
Run little darlin'/you've got to run right out of the gate...
Run like an ol' John Deere/run like a bad mistake...
Run like the wind/why don't you run for Heaven's sake...
Run run run run till you just go crazy...
Till you just go crazy...
Why don't you run for Heaven's sake...
Run little darlin'/run little darlin' run

- Ted Jones

Deepest Shade of Blue

Spent a little time on the beach/got some sand between my toes...
And a few more places I won't mention up and down the coast...
Maybe I should've stayed/I could be lazing around counting the waves...
But every time I see the ocean/all I think about is you...
In your eyes the deepest shade of blue...
I like the sound of an airplane/makes me look up in the sky...
Makes me stop and think just how fast life goes flying by...
Touching down in different towns/stirring up the clouds...
Way up in the heavens it's a different kind of view...
All the colors in the rainbow...
All the flowers in the fields...
All the stars in heaven...
All I know that's real...
In your eyes the deepest shade of blue

- Chuck McGill, Jonathan Singleton, Ted Jones

Sober Light of Day

Lizbeth sure lit a fire last night/never seen blue eyes burn so bright...
Me and ol' Liz and a bottle of Jack/I told her things I can never take back...
Two hearts beating one for the other/falling fast like star crossed lovers...
I told her she was the only one/the only one I ever would love...
The only one I ever would love...
And if the wind and the rain could love like me and her...
It'd be a hurricane...
And if the stars fell as hard as we are...
It'd leave scars across the sky...
That's why people don't fall in love that way...
No people don't fall in love that way...
In the sober light of day...
Jenny had a smile like summer sunshine/lips as sweet as homemade wine...
I asked her would she pour me a cup/she said stay all night and drink it all up...
Lord that girl put a spark in me/set me on fire like gasoline...
And the flame she lit took me so high/I never even told ol' Liz goodbye...
No I never even told ol' Liz goodbye...
People don't fall in love that way...
In the sober light of day

- Jonathan Singleton, Ted Jones

Cowboy Christmas

It's Christmas have you got a little present for me...
All wrapped up underneath the tree...
With ribbons and bows/ribbbons and bows...
What could it be/Santa Claus knows...
Bobby wants cowboy boots and a gun...
Connie wants to party till the night's all done...
With sugar and spice/sugar and spice...
Tell me who's gonna be naughty or nice...
Comfort and joy/comfort and joy...
Everybody wants a little comfort and joy...
A brand new toy/a brand new toy...
Everybody wants to get a brand new toy...
Everybody wants to be a cowboy...
Head 'em up/move 'em out/move 'em out/head 'em up...
Head 'em up/move 'em out/raw hide...
Over the fields and through the snow...
Hark and you'll hear a heavenly host...
With jingle bells/jingle bells...
Born is the King of Israel...
The faithful pray for the little child...
Peace on earth and mercy mild...
Holy night/holy night...
Shine on everlasting light...
Comfort and joy/comfort and joy...
Everybody wants to be a cowboy

- Ted Jones

Shadow of the Blues

I was talking with my friend the other day...
He was feeling kind of low/a little bit afraid...
He told me he thought his life was just wasting away...
I didn't know what to say...
He said I'm tired/I can't get my juices flowing...
I wanted to help you know but I had to get going...
He said you don't know how it feels when the doors are all closing...
And the windows won't open...
I need something different/something right...
Some kind of miracle to change my life...
And I'm praying somewhere there's a light to guide me through...
stop this living in the shadow of the blues...
I got some pain of my own I wish I could kill...
Got some empty space I don't know how to fill...
And I wish I could find some kind of magic pill...
Don't think I ever will...
Maybe I'll just run away/disappear for a day...
I need something different/something right...
Some kind of miracle to change my life...
And I'm praying somewhere there's a light to guide me through...
And stop this living in the shadow of the blues

- Chuck McGill, Ted Jones

Jump through the Window

Some times I get so broken hearted/feeling low down and I don't know why...
Some days don't even get me started or I just might break down and cry...
I keep on digging myself a deeper hole/must believe I'm going somewhere...
And it's cold and dark the deeper I go/almost afraid I might get scared down there...
I think I'll jump through the window...
Maybe hop an ol' freight train...
Run away and join the circus...
Or maybe I'll just fade away...
I think I'll jump through the window...
Somewhere between ignorance and bliss/that's where I find myself today...
Momma told me there'd be days like this...
When it's hard to find a good reason to stay...
And it feels like it might be the right time to do it...
Lord somebody please won't you help me through it...
Don't know why I get to feeling so low...
Think I'll jump through the window

- Jonathan Singleton, Ted Jones

Roman Guard

Time to lay down this sword/step away from this war...
I'm old and outworn/don't want to fight anymore...
I am the Roman Guard and I carry a scar deep in my heart...
And I've held back the tears for a thousand years...
And I've lived so long and I've come so far...
And it's been so hard/I am the Roman guard...
I stand on the wall and I watch the night fall...
From dusk until dawn I die for us all...
Well a man must be brave/he must trust in the fates...
When they call out his name and the world must be saved...
I am the Roman guard

- Ted Jones
